Wedderburn - Illawarra Coal Applies For Exploration License ELA3474

Longwall Mining - A Potential threat to Georges River

Illawarra Coal has recently lodged an Exploration Licence Application (ELA3474) with the NSW Department of Primary Industries.

The proposed licence covers an area of approximately five square kilometres, which is located about four kilometres north of Appin, in the vicinity of the Wedderburn area.

The purpose of the proposed licence is to investigate and determine more information regarding the geological features of the coal seams deep below the earth’s surface. This activity is part of exploration process which takes some time, and aims to assess the size and quality of a coal deposit and to determine if it can be economically recovered.

Actual extraction of the coal does not necessarily follow exploration activity. Uneconomic coal deposits or major breaks in the seam may be discovered which could prohibit future mining in the area.

Wedderburns rivers, creeks and properties

The license (Exploration License ELA3474) affects the Dharawal State Recreation Area, Georges River, Stokes Creek, Pheasants Creek and O'Hares Creek with the western boundary running parralel with and in some cases less than 100 metres from Georges River. The south eastern perimeter follows Stokes Creek and the eastern perimeter is less than 250 metres from O'Hares Creek. The northern boundary is approximately 200 metres south of Hodgsons Close.

Properties which may be affected are adjacent to the following roads:

  • Lysaght Rd
  • Blackburn Rd
  • Exley Rd
  • Victoria Rd
  • Katania Rd
  • Kenwood Rd
Properties closer to Campbelltown which may be affected are as far north as The Nook and north east to the Landing Strip off Aberfoyle Road
Please note that on their website Rivers SOS claim damage occurs from longwall mining up to and beyond 1.5 kilometres.

BHP gets thumbs up for Wedderburn exploration

28 November 2008 - Mining Exploration Wedderburn

THE government has given BHP Billiton the green light to explore for coal in Wedderburn, near Campbeltown in NSW.

BHP subsidiary, Illawarra Coal, applied for an exploration licence from the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) in August 2008.
The proposal sparked concerns from residents regarding the environmental effects and impact to the community. Locals claim property values will plummet and adversely affect the quiet rural town.

BHP general manager of sustainable development, John Brannon, says the impacts will be managed by the Mine Subsidence Board (MSB) and further steps will be taken before the company begins mining the area.

BHP is also working to set up a community reference group to assist with the exploration process.

Illawarra Coal - commitment to environmentally sustainable mining?

Illawarra Coal believes the findings by the panel highlight and reinforce the Company’s already rigorous and sustainable approach to mine planning.

“Illawarra Coal is committed to environmentally sustainable mining and we acknowledge, as does the Report, that mining has impacts, and what is important is getting the balance right between these impacts and economic benefits,” they said.

“The Report further supports what Illawarra Coal has said for some time – that our operations have no impact to Sydney’s valuable water supply, or headwater swamps.

“We look forward to examining the Report in detail, and working with Government to address any areas of concern to ensure that a balanced approach to mining occurs which supports the economies and communities in which we operate.”
